Gordano School Food Technology Suite

Project Overview

Working for LSP, Cornerstone was appointed to remodel a redundant kitchen and an adjoining classroom at Gordano School in Portishead, turning them into a new, modern food technology teaching space. The package took the two tired rooms back and delivered a single bright, practical classroom fitted with 12 teaching kitchens.

The Brief

The school needed a food technology room fit for modern teaching: a space where pupils could cook in small groups, with every station easy for staff to see and supervise from the front of the room. The brief was to make the most of the existing footprint, replacing the old layout with a clear, well-organised suite of 12 teaching kitchens, ready for lessons from the first day of the new term.

The Challenge

The whole project had to be delivered within the school summer break, and the scope went well beyond a straightforward fit-out. Demolition, structural alterations to form the new space and a full package of mechanical and electrical works all had to be completed before the new kitchens could go in, with no room for the programme to slip into term time.

We sequenced the work tightly, getting the demolition and structural works done early so the M&E trades had clear access to install the new services to all 12 stations. Materials and kitchen units were lined up well ahead of time and the trades closely coordinated, so each stage followed straight on from the last and the room was handed over ready for the start of term.

The Result

Gordano School now has a modern, purpose-built food technology suite in place of two under-used rooms. The new space was completed within the summer break and handed over ready for teaching, so staff and pupils could start using it from the first week of the new term with no disruption to lessons.

FEEDBACK FROM THE SCHOOL
The food technology teachers absolutely love their new space and can't wait to get going in it in the new term.
